Moon Hill, aptly named for the moon-shaped hole near its summit, is a pleasant bike ride through tiers of rice paddies
from Yangshuo 阳朔, near Guilin, Guangxi province (May 2001).

The Huangguoshu Falls 黄果树大瀑布
in Guizhou province is a stunning 265 feet wide and 243 feet down. Visitors are able to hike along
the river to the falls, walk behind through the Water Curtain Cave, and then head back on the other side of the
river (July 2008).

Tiger Leaping Gorge 虎跳峡, Yunnan
province, juts up to an elevation of over 12,700 feet. The deafening rush of water rapids and dwarfing effect of the mammoth
gorges create an unforgettable trekking experience (July 2002).

A
Naxi farmer 纳西族农民 caters to his vegetable patch outside of Baisha, the former capital of
the Naxi kingdom. Houses are constructed from large mud bricks placed on a stone foundation (July 2002).

Xishuangbanna
西双版纳, a region in Yunnan province that is home to the Dai Minority, is located on the border of Burma
and Laos. Featured here is a stupa, or Buddhist reliquary, in a monastery located in Ganlanba, south of the regional capital
of Jinghong (July 2002).

Sichuan province is an ideal location
for growing tea. This tea farm in Jiajiang county, near Leshan 乐山, had tea bushes planted on the rolling hills for
miles around (November 2009).

The Old Town of Lijiang 丽江古城, Yunnan province, is a dazzling maze of restored wooden buildings featuring the architecture of the local minority
group called the Naxi (July 2002).

Lugu Lake
泸沽湖, on the border of Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, is the home of the Mosuo minority group, a matrilineal society.
Family life tends to center around the woman, who may select her lifetime mate through an elaborate ritual of song and dance.
I lived with a Mosuo family while traveling through the area, learning how a couple pairs for life in construct known
as "zouhun," and thus do not marry according to contemporary standards (July 2002).

White
Bamboo Shoot Pagoda in Damenglong, Xishuangbanna 西双版纳. I lived with a Dai family while exploring this area, helping them hoe their
watermelon patches. The surrounding countryside also has expansive rubber tree plantations and rice paddies (July 2002).

Chili peppers hang out to dry in Zhongxian County, Chongqing
重庆忠县, near the Three Gorges of the Yangzi River. Much of this area was destroyed as the Three Gorges Dam
project downriver became completed (October 2000).
