GansuDune.jpg

The sun sets at Singing Sand Mountains, Dunhuang, Gansu province 敦煌鸣沙山. Graceful sloping mountains, some as high as 5,600 feet, create a surreal beachlike environment in a landlocked area where the ocean could not be more distant (May 2002).

InnerMongolia.JPG

Inner Mongolia 内蒙古 is famous for its rolling grassy plains that stretch for miles on end. I hiked through this plain several hours north of Hohhot, staying in a Mongolian yurt and meeting up with many Mongolian ranchers herding their sheep (August 2007).

Yushu.JPG

Hiking beyond the distant prayer flags atop a kora (pilgrimage) mountain trail near Yushu 青海玉树, in southern Qinghai Province (September 2009).

PotalaPalace.jpg

The awe-inspiring Potala Palce sits high in the center of Lhasa, capital of Tibet (June 2002).

TianChi.jpg

A Kazak woman stands outside of her yurt overlooking Heaven Pool 天池, in the Heavenly Mountains outside Urumuqi, Xinjiang. We enjoyed a meal inside of sticky rice mixed with carrots and lamb that the local residents eat with their hands (May 2002).

XinjiangDesert.jpg

Camels rest outside of the ancient Silk Road town of Kuche in Xinjiang. The bleak desertscapes extend beyond the horizon, calling to mind the hardships and determination of those who traveled the Silk Road (May 2002).

WenchengTemple.JPG

Tossing wind horses at the Princess Wencheng Temple 文成公主庙 in Qinghai Province (September 2009).

TibetanYaks.jpg

Some yaks seem startled at their unexpected company atop Mt. Angkor. As extraordinarily nimble animals, these yaks can with weigh nearly a ton, grow well over five feet tall, maneuver through rocks and gulches, and carry loads of around 150 pounds (June 2002).

PutaoGou.jpg

A true desert oasis sits outside of Turpan, Xinjiang 吐鲁番. Russet sands provide a stark contrast to the verdant valley and cotton-balled azure sky (May 2002).

UigyurFamily.jpg

A Uygur family takes a noonday break from its clothing stall in a Kuche market. They spent quite some time talking with me about their lives in such a remote place (May 2002).
